FSHD University

FSHD University is your center for education about the art and science of living with FSH muscular dystrophy.

We focus on three "departments"  – Physical Health, Wellness, and Research – drawing on the many resourceful, creative people in our community who have earned their MDs and PhDs in living with FSHD. Over time, we expect to establish new departments to address additional areas where we see a thirst for knowledge. Your input and suggestions are very much welcome.

This is YOUR university!

  • Drug Development Update

    Drug Development Update

This is an unprecedented time for FSHD therapy development. Fulcrum Therapeutics is recruiting for its Phase 3 clinical trial of losmapimod. Dyne Therapeutics and Avidity Biosciences are among several companies that are on the verge of launching Phase 1 and Phase 2 trials. What does this mean for patients? How does one choose a trial and enroll in one? Jeff Statland, MD, co-director of the international FSHD Clinical Trial Research Network (CTRN), updates us on the FSHD drug development landscape. Find out about current and upcoming research studies and clinical trials. Dr. Statland is a professor of neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.
  • Bowel and Urinary issues in FSHD

Bowel and Urinary issues in FSHD

Drs. Michael Cole, Kathy Mathews, Christopher Cooper, and Eyad Hanna, of the University of Iowa discuss a new study regarding the frequency of gastrointestinal and urological symptoms in FSHD, as well as their impact on quality of life. These data were collected by a survey that the FSHD Society distributed last year, so now you will find out the results. The Iowa team will discuss their findings, what this may mean for future research, and the importance for patients to specifically discuss these symptoms during their doctors appointments.

Michael Cole, MD, is Neuroimmunology and Neuroinfectious Diseases Fellow and Child Neurology Fellow Associate, University of Iowa
Kathy Mathews, MD, Professor of Pediatrics-General Neurology, University of Iowa
Christopher S. Cooper M.D., FACS, FAAP, is Tyrone D. Artz Chair in Urology and Director of Pediatric Urology, University of Iowa
Eyad Hanna, MD, MME, is Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Pancreatology and Nutrition, University of Iowa
  • Nutritional and exercise interventions for FSHD

Nutritional and exercise interventions for FSHD

FSHD University webinar (September 15, 2022) by Mark Tarnopolsky, MD PhD, Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine and Director of Neuromuscular and Neurometabolic Clinic at McMaster University Medical Center in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Tarnopolsky is also CEO and CSO of Exerkine Corporation. He sees a large number of FSHD patients in his clinic and has observed that exercise provides significant benefits to them. Research in Dr. Tarnopolsky’s lab investigates the role of exercise and antioxidants as potential therapeutic interventions for FSHD.

Dr. Tarnopolsky explains, “FSHD is a genetic disorder that results from the toxic over-expression of the DUX4 gene, leading to skeletal muscle atrophy and weakness. The final common pathways of cellular dysfunction in this disorder are similar to other muscle diseases (i.e., myotonic MD, mitochondrial disease and sporadic inclusion body myopathy) and human aging associated muscle weakness (sarcopenia) and include; muscle stem cell dysfunction, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and a reduction in muscle protein synthesis. We and others have shown the long-term clinical benefit from exercise in DM1, aging and mitochondrial disease and will present encouraging data on the long-term benefit of exercise in FSHD. Furthermore, appropriately targeted multi-ingredient dietary approaches represent a form of “nutra-pharmaceutical” therapy and we have shown significant benefits in aging, obesity and mitochondrial disease. I will discuss the clinical support for optimal dietary nutrient intake and the potential for a multi-ingredient nutrapharmaceutical to target the primary and secondary cellular consequences of FSHD that can be an immediately applied therapy and an adjunct to any future genetic or small molecule approaches.”
